HOMECOMING

The Pier, the Hangar, the Parade Field

I have stood on a pier at 0500 with coffee going cold in my hand, watching a gray hull come around the bend after seven months. I have stood in a hangar while a C-17 taxied in slower than any aircraft in history. If you have been there, you know. If it is your first time, here is the truth of it: the crowd is a wall of signs and flags, your service member is scanning that wall from a distance, and a good welcome home banner is how they find you first.

That is why homecoming work gets priority in our shop. A custom military homecoming banner is not decoration. It is a signal. It says we are here, we never stopped being here, and we made something loud to prove it. We print them big, we print them fast, and we treat the date on the order form as written in pencil, because return dates move.

What makes a good one? Short words, huge letters, high contrast. "WELCOME HOME DADDY" in letters two feet tall beats a paragraph every time. The banners that work are the ones a tired service member can read through 100 feet of chaos, tears, and other people's balloons.

The Homecoming Banner Mini-Guide

We have printed enough deployment homecoming signs to know what works. If you are staring at a blank order form, start here.

01

Put the right things on it. First name or the family nickname, big. Rank is optional and most spouses skip it. Ship, squadron, or unit if you have room. Then one short headline: Welcome Home, We Missed You, Our Hero Is Home. Five words or fewer. Save the inside jokes for the small print at the bottom.

02

Size it to be read from 100 feet. A 3x6 ft banner is the practical minimum for a pier or flight line. Letters need to be at least 10 inches tall at that distance. A 2x4 is fine for the front door, but on the pier it disappears. When in doubt, go up a size.

03

Consider a photo banner. A full color photo of your service member, the kids, or the whole family printed edge to edge is the banner people walk over to look at. Send the highest resolution photo you have, straight off the phone is fine, and we will tell you honestly whether it holds up at 4x8 ft.

04

Order early, and do not sweat the date. Return dates slip. Weather, maintenance, port calls, the needs of the service. We print in 2 to 3 days because we know families sometimes get 72 hours of real notice. If the date moves after your banner ships, it keeps just fine rolled up in a closet. And if you are navigating the reunion itself, the deployment resources at Military OneSource are genuinely worth your time.

All custom vinyl banners are printed on 13oz scrim vinyl, hemmed on all four edges, and grommeted so you can zip tie them to anything the base will let you touch. Custom yard signs come with an H stake. Need an odd size? Ask. The printer does not care and neither do we.

CEREMONY

Retirements, Change of Command, and Everything With a Script

Military ceremonies run on a program, and the signage has a job in that program. We print for the whole calendar of them.

For indoor backdrops we usually steer you to fabric instead of vinyl. It photographs without glare, drapes clean, and folds into a suitcase.

ORGANIZATIONS

Posts, Recruiters, and the Veteran Business Community

The other half of our banner work comes from organizations that live on visibility. VFW and American Legion posts ordering event banners for fish fries, poker runs, and Memorial Day ceremonies. Recruiting stations that need a retractable banner stand that sets up in thirty seconds at a career fair and survives the trunk of a government vehicle. Veteran owned businesses working trade show circuits who want a backdrop that does not look like it came from a big box print counter.

Fundraisers are their own category. If your post or family readiness group is running a golf tournament or a 5K, sponsor banners are how you deliver value to the businesses that wrote checks. We batch them so every logo prints clean at the same size, and we turn the whole set together so nothing shows up late.

MATERIALS

What We Print On, and Why

Banner material is not complicated, and anyone who makes it sound complicated is setting up a price. Here is the honest version.

Care is simple. Roll your banner, never fold it. Folds crease vinyl permanently and the crease shows in every photo. Wipe it with mild soap and water, dry it fully, and store it rolled somewhere that does not bake. Treated that way, a homecoming banner will still look sharp when you pull it out for the next deployment. Plenty of our customers are on their third homecoming with the same banner.

"We ordered the 4x8 with a photo of him holding our daughter the day he left. When the buses pulled into the field at the redeployment ceremony, he told me later it was the first thing he saw. Three hundred families out there and he walked straight to us."

Amanda R., Army spouse, Fort Campbell

Make the Whole Day Match

Most homecoming and ceremony orders do not stop at the banner. Families want matching homecoming shirts with the same photo and headline in full color. Reunions add custom koozies and reunion gear for the barbecue after. Commands outfitting a welcome team order embroidered polos that outlast the one event, and anything over a couple dozen pieces is cheaper through screen printing. If you have the idea but not the artwork, our design services team will lay out the banner, the shirts, and the yard signs as one matched set, usually in a single proof round.

FAQ

Questions We Get Every Week

The return date just moved up. How fast can you really print?

Standard turnaround is 2 to 3 business days plus shipping. If the ship or flight moved left and you are down to days, call before you order and we will tell you straight whether we can make it. Rush printing and expedited shipping cover most surprises. We would rather say no honestly than let a banner miss a homecoming.

What photo quality do I need for a photo banner?

A photo straight off a modern phone is usually plenty, as long as it is the original file and not a screenshot or a compressed text message copy. Banners are viewed from feet away, not inches, so they forgive more than you would think. Send what you have and we will check it at full size. If it will look soft, we tell you before it prints.

Indoor or outdoor material, how do I choose?

Going outside for more than a day, or anywhere near weather: 13oz vinyl, or mesh if wind is the main enemy. Indoor ceremony, photo backdrop, or anything that folds into luggage: fabric. If one banner has to do both jobs, vinyl handles indoors fine, it just glares a little under flash.

Do you ship to bases and overseas addresses?

Yes. We ship to CONUS bases, hotels near graduation venues, and APO and FPO addresses. Military mail overseas takes longer, so build in extra time. For homecomings we usually ship to your home or hotel, since you are the one holding the banner on the pier.

Can I reuse a banner for the next homecoming?

Absolutely, and you should. This is the argument for leaving dates off the design. "Welcome Home Chief" works every deployment, while "Welcome Home Chief, March 2026" works once. Roll it, store it dry, and a 13oz banner will serve an entire sea duty career.

How do I actually hang this thing?

Every banner comes hemmed with brass grommets about every 2 feet. Zip ties handle 90 percent of jobs: fence, railing, pier stanchion, garage. Bungee cords are better in wind because they flex instead of tearing. Check base rules before attaching anything to government property.

The ship does not wait, and neither do we.
